New Star Trek Fan Kits !!!

Well well well, three holes in the ground.

It looks like Paramount has released some interesting materials, namely their Star Trek Fan Kits, for use with communities and blogs, such as Blogger and Facebook.

There are other items to come, but I’ve already themed my blog, as can plainly be seen.

Go ahead, take a look at StarTrekFanKit.com.

Star Trek: Countdown

This is probably the only time I have ever had any interest in Comic Books, and I have to say, this prequel Comic series for the new Movie coming out May 8th is excellent.

If the movie is as good as this, I’ll be very happy indeed !!!

An Old Video

One thing I remember from years back, when I lived in Crestline, was the Firefighters' efforts to save all our homes when the Old Fire broke out.

Once the fire was cleared, and we went up to clean out the rotting refrigerators (yikes !!!), we drove down the back side of the mountain, and I was playing Jerry Goldsmith's Main Titles from The Sum Of All Fears.

Seeing the burn area, and the incredible images captured on the web from the fire, I edited together a short video with the music, with some assistance and tweaks from my wife.

It's been on YouTube for a while, but I though I'd share it.

Indiana Jones Soundtracks Collection

At the end of last year, Concorde assembled a collection of all 4 soundtracks to the Indiana Jones soundtracks, with Raiders, Temple of Doom and The Last Crusade expanded and completely re-mastered.

In addition, unreleased cues from the first 3 scores and an interview are included on a 5th CD.

Crystal Skull is exactly the same as the standalone Concorde disk, but is a nice value-add, and everything matches up stylistically.

Score Completeness

It should be obvious that the scores are not complete. However, this is by design, and actually works well, and unless one is really intimately acquainted with the scores and movies, there is nothing that is missing to the ear.

The Temple of Doom is a real find here, with a lot of fantastic music added.

Also, the scores are rearranged into film order, with a couple of minor exceptions, and it is a great listening experience.

The only problem in terms of content is the fact that the Desert Chase cues is the original album edit, and not the complete cue as presented on the DCC release from 1995.

Sound Quality

The sound quality is absolutely stunning on this set, and is a joy to the ears. There are slight speed/pitch issues, but these are not even noticeable to my ears, and do not detract from the listening experience for me.

Cue Editing

It has been pointed out that cues that are often heard together are separated in this release.

I actually LIKE my soundtracks like that. It means I get to hear smaller snippets of music, and it becomes easier to skip to my favorite cues.

Presentation

In many ways, the presentation and packaging is very good, though it could have been better.

I have had no issues with the DigiPaks instead of the standard Jewel cases, but I know some people do.

The lack of a detailed cue breakdown, ala the 1995 DCC Raiders disk, is disappointing, but what is there is very nice.

The bonus disk is presented within a simple slipcase, so I am very careful whenever I get the disk out. This is my only major issue with the presentation.

The set is contained within a very nice fake leather case that looks like an old book, with a very nice Fedora and Whip logo. This is very good, and it looks good next to my Lord of the Rings Complete Recordings sets.

Value for Money

In as of itself, this set is easily worth the $40-55 price tag it carries, and provides a nice collection of music, some of which is rare, unreleased or only available via Japanese import.

In addition, this is absolutely classic stuff, and sounds fantastic.

The CDs for the first 3 are becoming available as individual CDs in February 2009, though the additional material and interviews on the 5th CD is not included.

For those who want only one or two of the soundtracks, this might be an option, but there is some great material for all of the scores.

Conclusion

Much has been said of this release, to a point where a web site has been set up for those who must know what is missing, and what was on the other releases of these scores.

Classic scores at a reasonable price, despite the flaws, and a must-have. 4 out of 5.

Star Trek 2009: My Thoughts So Far *SPOILERS*

It seems a lot about this movie is being revealed before the release on May 8th, and based on what I've seen and heard, I'm getting an interesting picture in my mind's eye as to what we will see.

Canon

It appears that this movie is essentially a reboot, but not in the strictest sense.

It seems to me that the Nero's interference in the past, that leads to the destruction of the Kelvin and Kirk's father George, also leads to other changes in the timeline, including an awareness of the Romulans years before, which may change other details, like when/where the Enterprise is built, and many of the event of James Kirk's upbringing.

Since this is an alternate universe spawned by the Narada, the existing Canon is not violated.

However, things WILL be obviously very different in many ways.

To my mind, it is up to the fans to decide whether this movie is a Canon alternate timeline, or whether to regard this as a reboot, and this will be debated for a long time after it's release.

Design

It appears that everything looks very different to the TOS style, and this movie is visually going to change things up.

However, the basics have not really changed. The uniforms have the same basic color scheme as the Original Series, Communicators look like they function exactly the same, as do Phasers and Tricorders, and with some differences, the characters are essentially the same ones we've known from the Original Series.

Everything seems to have a vaguely Apple iStore/Art Deco/50s Chrome feel to it, which makes things appear to have an essentially unified design base.

The Enterprise herself also looks very different, but is still instantly recognizable as the Enterprise.

The Bridge also is far more elaborate than the 60s set from the Original Series, and a lot larger.

Externally, we get a ship with mayn features taken from the TMP Refit Enterprise, some resembling the Original Series version, and again fitting the iStore/Art Deco/50s sensibility.

This is fitting for the point of view of rebooting the franchise for an audience who need to be taken out of the Trek-Is-Geeky mindset.

Conclusion

It appears to me that the movie will be quite the adventure, much faster paced that we are used to, and potentially more accessible to the non-Trek mainstream audience.

One does not need any familiarity with the original Star Trek to understand this film.

So far, I very much like what I've seen and heard, and look forward to opening night on May 8th 2009.

BSG Let's Frak Party on Friday !!!

Star Trek isn't my only obsession ;-)

I have RSVP'd to go to the BSGCast Let's Frak party on Friday Night and Saturday, with a viewing of the Season 4.5 Premiere in HD, with no commercials, and a few people from the show.

This kicks off the weekend's Battlestar Galactica Props auction at the Pasadena Convention Center.

I'm looking forward to meeting up with the rest of my Prometheus crewmates, and maybe a few IFT Officers (actually, many members are both, like me).

Cool Beans !!!

JJ Abrams and Star Trek

I have seen the trailer, read the blogs, read and heard the interviews, speculated with friends and acquaintances, and conversed with both Trekkers and Non-Trekkers about this movie.

This new movie looks like something different than the Star Trek we are used to, and yet it feels familiar, and to me, somehow "right", based on what I've seen so far.

The new Enterprise, what has been published, looks to be very well realized, with a degree of familiarity, yet completely new at the same time.

The new uniforms are great, with the basic look of the original show, only with more detail and subtle tweaks to make it convincing that the primary-colored tops could be 23rd century uniforms.

The Bridge looks very different, yet with a basic design in keeping with the original, and it looks like something far more real.

The film looks like it will be very much an adventure in the truest sense of the word, with plenty of fun to be had.

The leaked information indicates that there are many moments that center on the characters that we all know and love.

So far, I'm very happy with the way it's going, and hopefully the film will live up to the promise of the trailer, and to the promise of adventure.

Visual Studio 2008 - Launch Event Freebies

It is unfortunate, but many IT Professionals cannot afford on a personal budget to get hold of the development tools for creating software.

I was pleased, however, when the Visual Studio 2005 Launch Event came up.

Well, what do you know... they were giving SQL Server 2005 Standard (with 1 CAL), Visual Studio 2005 Standard, and an online IOU to download BizTalk Server once it was released.

Score !!!

And before that, I went to an Office 2003 Launch Event and got Office 2003 Professional and OneNote 2003 as freebies.

In addition, I got Visual Basic .net 2003 as part of the Office 2003 development tools, and and yet ANOTHER copy of Office 2003 Professional, since the first license given did not have development capabilities.

Well, I managed to cajole my boss into letting me go to the Visual Studio 2008 Launch event.

And guess what: I'll be getting VS 2008 for free, and versions of Windows Server 2008 (probably a 180 day trial) and SQL Server 2008.

So, Thank you Microsoft for the freebies. I am putting them to good use.

If only I'd gotten to the Office 2007 launch event ...

TOS Remastered

After a slightly shaky start, it looks like it started shaping up nicely on the new VFX front with The Trouble With Tribbles.

The only real issue I had with the old CGI model was the Nacelle Caps.

Aside from that, the other episodes were excellent in terms of non-space changes.

And next, of course, we have the great episode 'Mirror, Mirror'. What an opportunity with the exterior shots to have some fun !!!

Danny The Dustcart

Sarah, my sister, has worked with her husband Daniel Roberts on a great little children's book.

Not what I usually talk about, but I am brimming with the pride of an older brother, so forgive the gushing ;-)

Seriously though, if you have young kids with an interest in Dustcarts, this book will delight them.

Get them here.

Star Trek Remastered

Well, after watching the first of the reproduced episodes, I would post it under the Pretty Good category.

The new visual effects worked, were in the correct style for the series, and did not jump out at you.

Also, I really enjoyed hearing the Star Trek theme re-recorded.

I have 2 products I want to see:

  1. The new versions of the Star Trek series on DVD, similar in vein to the Star Trek season box-sets that are available, and some behind-the-scenes information about the changes and restoration work done.
  2. The remastered Star Trek theme on CD or DVD-Audio, perhaps however many versions of the theme that were recorded (for each season of Star Trek).

I know it'll be a while before the former, and the latter may never happen, but I can always hope.

The Two Towers - Complete Recordings - Release Date Set !!!

Well, looks like I'm the first to post it on the web, aside from my source (below), but here it is:

Howard Shore's The Lord Of The Rings: The Two Towers - The Complete Recordings is due in late October 2006.

The poster, Doug, is the author of the extensive booklet about the score, and who performed the same duties for the Fellowship score.

Oooohhhh ... Nerdgasms !!!!

Felloship Of The Ring Complete Recordings

Oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy...

It has arrived. Perhaps the best release of a film score in history, for one of the best film scores in history.

Every note of score from the films, with no editing between cues, and in film order, spanning 3 CDs.

A 4th disk includes the complete score AGAIN on DVD, presented in Dolby Digital 5.1.

A 24 page booklet detailing the score from a thematic point-of-view, and the whole lot bound to look like a book, similar to the Extended Editions of the films.

The Two Towers and Return Of The King will also be released in the same way.

When christmas comes, this is my number one item.

Lord Of The Rings - The Fellowship Of The Ring - The Complete Recordings

There are some scores that deserve a complete release and good presentation. The Lord Of The Rings Scores are in that rare category.

With this release, as well as The Two Towers and The Return Of The King scores, we will have access to what looks like the best presentation of any film scores in history bar none.

This is well deserved, and I will, come hell and high water, obtain these releases.

Thank you Howard Shore, for some of the best film music ever written.

Sci-Fi Developments

Well, it appears that this is a good October-December sales season for a Sci-Fi fan like myself.

I finally have the complete Star Trek movie collection with the Special/Director Editions.

Fellowship Of The Ring gets a complete score release, with the entire score in 5.1 DVD Audio as an added bonus, and The Two Towers and Return Of The King to follow.

And of course, I finally complete the Star Wars 'saga' with the release of Episode III on DVD.

And the Reimagined/New Battlestar Galactica is getting better and better. I'm suffering withdrawal symptoms until the second half of season 2 airs in January.

Yes, the next 3 months will be a lot of fun, and I will be a little lighter in the wallet.

SandDock Control ..

I have been using the new SandDock Control by DivElements, and along with SandBar, i provides the basic UI Elements for Paternoster Notepad 2.

This is my little text editor, and once complete and debugged, it will be posted to my web site with complete Source Code and credits.

I am using a lot of freeware and GPL components, most notably the ICSharpDevelop.TextEditor control, and some nifty routines from VBAccelerator.

I am also creating documentation for the software.

Keep an eye on this spot for news and updates ...

VB.NET 2005

I have just been looking at Visual Basic .NET 2005 Express, and I was glad to see that Microsoft is including Office 2003 style icons, as well as an Office 2003 style menu system out of the box.

Of course, for my VB.NET 2003 work, I like to use Divelements SandBar (http://www.divil.co.uk) and the Gyfz Office 2003 16x16 icons.

I was a professional developer for 11 years, but all of the software was always licensed to the company.

Because of the prices of these items, I can get the tools I need at a price I can personally afford.

Thank you DivElements, Microsoft and Glyfz.
